How Arc Stud Welding Works

Arc stud welding is a form of spot welding that joins together a large diameter fastener to a rough, thick metal surface. The fastener is first loaded into the stud welder chuck and then positioned firmly against the work surface. A ceramic ferrule should encircle the tip of the fastener; this ceramic ring acts as a flux and helps concentrate the heat generated by the electrical current.

What separates drawn arc stud welding from CD stud welding is the current that is used to weld the fastener to the work metal. When the trigger is pulled on the welding gun, the weld gun initiates a controlled electric arc current that flows through the stud and the to the respective portion of the base metal. This arc current melts both the tip of the fastener and a select area of the work metal. Once the fastener and work metal are molten, the fastener is plunged into the work surface, thereby fusing the two pieces together. The metal then solidifies, leaving a quality weld.
